Monday, July 04, 2016
Ninja Bowl is
the third concept by The Astronauts Group, helmed by Darren Wee, who also
manages Chillax Café and Babette Restaurant & Bar. Ninja Bowl offers hearty
bowls and all-day brunch with a touch of Japanese flair. They took over the
site that was previously occupied by Department of Caffeine (DOC), in Duxton
Road.
Be spoilt for choice as the ninja bowls comes in
eight selection, and are basically a Japanese inspired rice bowls that includes
Japanese-inspired items such as aburi chashu (torched pork belly). At the same time, you can go along with some healthy top ups like:
- White Quinoa | $3.0 – a high in protein option.
- Orzo Pasta | $2.0 – a rice-shaped short-cut pasta tossed with honey, multi-grain mustard, miso and chilli or a heap of garden greens.
- Ninja Rice | $2.0 – a blend of vinegared Japanese pearl rice and brown rice with seaweed flakes.
Without further introduction, here's the
Polynesian-inspired bowl, Yasai | $16.0 consist of chunks of salmon poke steeped
in soy and ponzu blend, and comes with tasting trimmings of balsamic tomatoes, mixed
sultanas, and an onsen egg. Although I’m not a fan of quinoa, but the
combination with this is amazing. My pick out of the three!
Next, Kabuki |
$14.0 with deboned chicken thigh that has been marinated in miso, soy sauce, garlic and honey. The
bowl also includes baby corn, homemade pickled beets, an onsen egg, Korean beansprouts and sprinkled with fried shallots. We had it mixed with ninja rice and it was done right.
Japanese food lover may find the following dish a favourite, highlighting japanese aburi chashu. Buta | $14.0 consist of the homemade cured pork belly, torched to achieve that smokey char texture. Sharing the bowl with balsamic tomatoes, roasted pumpkin seasoned, ume-pickled apples, an onsen egg and lastly seasoned with seaweed flakes and sesame seeds. For this, we paired it with orzo pasta, which is not bad too. Would preferred having my pork with ninja rice maybe?

Do not have to
worry if you don’t fancy any of the vegetables in their ninja bowls, they will
be please to swop it for other choices. For instant, if onsen egg isn’t your
thing, they wouldn’t mind whipping up a fried egg (as mentioned in their FB
page).
Well brunch is
always a good for me, and am always pleased to find all-day brunch menu. Plus the
weekday dinner service is finally extending to 9pm (refer to the new operating
hours below), yay to brunch for dinner too!
Love creamy base
and you’ll love Ebisu | $18.0, a bowl seared Hokkaido scallops and mussels soaked
in umami-filled miso cream sauce, and served with two toasts alongside. I
enjoyed dipping the toast into the creamy and fragrant sauce. The scallops were
the bomb, tremendously fresh and succulent. A dish I strongly recommends for
seafood lovers.
There’s always something
for the meat lover, Gyu & Tama | $17.0 comprises of Ninja Bowl’s signature
24-hours braised beef cheek with white button and shimeiji mushroom scrambled eggs,
topped with semi-fried tomatoes on a toast.
Moving off to
the dessert-mains, Fancy French | $16, a fig jam French toast created by
wife-cum-business partner to Darren, Cecilia Wong. This sophisticated sweet treat
is a made-to-order dish that requires a wait time of 20-minutes. Overall, I
love the dense thick-cut homemade brioche with the unique twist of applying fig
jam within, as well as the ume-boshi infused honey drizzled and topped with homemade
hazelnut butter. Finally touches includes trimming of green grapes, plums, fig
and edible flowers.
Dine in modern industrial interior with simple metal chairs, wood table tops and stainless steel shelves fills the room, allowing it to accommodate 46 guests. The wall mural contains touches of humour with amusing anecdotes reflecting the spontaneous and ligh-hearted nature of the establishment and people behind The Astronauts Group.
Note, the prices stated above are nett cost and the restaurant does not have service charge.
