NKIKICHUA: Steamboat

GoroGoro Steamboat & Korean Buffet @ Orchard Gateway Emerald | Somerset, Singapore

GoroGoro Steamboat & Korean Buffet Restaurant is helmed by the team that managed I'm Kim Korean BBQ and Kokomama Marketplace which are both located in School of The Arts (SOTA). Being the new venture, GoroGoro takes on a new location in Orchard Gateway @ Emerald, accessible via the lift in Crate & Barrel.

Besides having a strategic location, they are also distancing themselves from the pricey image of typical steamboat buffet restaurants situated in town area, by providing a light-hearted gleeful dining experience without having to burn a hole in your pockets.

The name GoroGoro came from the sound our hungry/empty stomach makes, it also signify the sound of steamboat broth boiling. Hence the brand is represented by a cute hungry monster, and each broth has its own mini mascot providing the fun element. Having said that, they offer six soup broth to choose from, namely Ginseng Chicken, Beauty Collagen, Mala, Tomyum, Tomato and Vegetarian.

It comes with two soup and my first pick would be Vegetarian as it is light and tasted like Japanese oden or rather white radish soup, followed by Beauty Collagen which also has a lighter taste as compared to those thick collagen soup.

If you want an additional soup, you can top it up at $5++ per table. Looking for something spicier, go for Mala though it isn't very spicy in my opinion. Whereas, the rest of the soups tends to be saltier, if that fits your palette, give it a try.

You can expect up to 50 selections of fresh meats, vegetables, drinks & Korean savouries for weekday lunch and over 70 choices for dinners and weekend dining.

Do note that the tasting session was held on a weekday dinner and I would say the buffet offers quite an extensive variety, especially so for the steamboat spread. All the essential steamboat ingredients are here!

Eat to your heart’s content with these Meat Madness counter containing from pork, chicken, beef and seafood such as squid.

Not forgetting the Korean savouries - cooked food at the buffet line. A long stretch of dishes to choose from, I personally recommend the Korean Fried Chicken and the Korean Soy Chicken. It’s usually gone in minutes but thank goodness it’s being replenished quite timely. Other dishes includes Japchae and Korean pancake.

Drinks, fruits and condiments range are decent. Glad there’s Korean Brown Rice Barley drink too!

A reminder, only take what you can finish if not may have to pay a penalty for any wastage of food!

How can you end the Korean feast without a Korean dessert? These ice-cream are available for sale at $2 - 3++ per stick. The Melon flavoured ones got me falling in love at my first bite! Others includes Soda and Chocolate, which I have yet to try haahaa.

Nan Hwa Fishboat 南华鱼头炉 @ North Bridge Road | Bugis, Singapore

AsianCuisine

Nan Hwa FishBoat has come a long way building up its legacy since 1927, also known as the oldest fish head steamboat restaurant in Singapore. Till today, they are still driven by a mission to recapture the nostalgia of families and friends bonding over a traditional steamboat meal. Being a representative of Singapore’s heritage, their signature silky smooth soup that combines the rich and sweet tastes has garnered the attention of international customers, and hence, the brand has recently made the move to franchise its business and will be expecting it across Asia within the next 12 months.

Nan Hwa FishBoat is accessibly positioned in an old shop house at the corner of North Bridge Road and Jalan Sultan. An old-school coffee shop setting with a lively atmosphere filled with patrons on the ground level’s dining area and the air lingers the smoky smell of charcoal. To ensure they attract more customers, an air-conditioned area is also available on the second level.

The Nan Hwa Chong signboard became popular that there are imitation of the traditional Teochew style fish soup steamboat. Well, you have to be that good to be imposed. It’s my first take on fish soup steamboat therefore it is not sufficient for a comparison.

With that said, even the drinks are homemade bringing you a touch of tradition once again.

Regular Grouper steamboat [$38/$45/$70] - how accommodating that the dishes comes in small, medium and large. Indeed the soup brings out the sweetness and richness from the fish, love how the seaweed has given it a extra touch.

Atlantic Codfish [add-on at $20] - this is new on their menu, it is meant to be eaten in shabu shabu style. Dip it in the soup for about 50seconds and you are good to eat it. Be careful it's really soft and can "disappear" into the soup.

Braised Pig Intestines [$8/$10/$12] - I got to say it is as good as those kway chap stall, even though it is not Nan Hwa Fishboat's specialise dishes.

Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves [$6/$8/$10] - for a moment, I thought this was kangkong! It's relatively good too.

Salted Egg Pork Ribs [$12/$15/$18] - the salted egg flavour could be more distinct though.

Oyster Omelette [$10/$12/$15] - didn't get to try as it was the first to be whipped out!

Fried Pork Belly with unique Fermented Red Beancurd [$10/$15/$18] - favourite of the night! It is comparable to Bangkok street stall's fermented pork. A slice of it is filled with the aroma flavour and the right chewy texture.

Fried Shrimp Roll [$8/$12/$15] - a simple and decent dish.

Four Heavenly King [$8/$10/$12] - it includes four types of vegetable, not a fan of eggplant.

Special Homemade Beancurd [$8/$12/$15] - this is quite addictive, it has a slightly tougher texture as compared to usual beancurd and is quite alike to fishcake. Dip it with the Thai chilli, perfect!

This is a add-on to our soup, giving it the extra flavour. I seriously can't recall what this is called but it is not salted fish though.

All steamboats uses the traditional way of cooking, unlike the contemporary gas-stove steamboats. By using charcoal it brings out the flavours better. It is prepared with the essence of fish bones and other secret ingredients. A potpourri of freshest fish and quality ingredients then goes into an amazing soup. Every pot of Nan Hwa fish head steamboat is prepared only upon order.
