How do you enjoy steamboat replacing the soup base with porridge? As interesting as it sounds, this is Hong Kong's cutting-edge food trend, “steam-potting”. Nestled in Serangoon Garden, Steam Box is here to join the steamboat bandwagon in Singapore, using a high-speed steaming technology to cook the ingredients.
Steam Box offers a wide array of ingredients from poultry, seafood, vegetables and dim sum. They are not kidding about the word 'fresh' as the seafood are delivered every morning. Hence certain items might be sold out by dinner time, which are the ones crossed up in red above.
Some of my personal favourite dishes are:
- Chef's Marinated Minced Pork with Premium Salted Fish | Small $4.5 - as featured in the centre of the steaming plate.
- Fresh Clams | $13.0 - which I recommend to go with the seafood sauce.
- Fresh Baramundi | $15.0 - also goes well with the seafood sauce. Best of all, it doesn't have that fishy taste or smell to it!
- Creamy Egg Custard Bun | $4.5 (3 pieces)
Similar to a steamboat, all the ingredients are brought to the table raw. However, instead of boiling it, we used the high-speed steamer. By using steam cooking, it locks in all the natural flavours and nutrients of the ingredients sealed.
Meanwhile those essences and juices will be used to cook the accompanying porridge, situated below the steaming plate. Glad my table has the Porridge B – top grade grain with clams, dried scallops and ginger slices | $18.0, I preferred this over Porridge A - top grade grain with century eggs, pork ribs and parsley | $15.0.
With the maximum of six-minutes for a dish to be cooked, you get enjoy the whole new dining experience with healthy and hearty cuisines that are bound to satisfy. Food are served in coloured plates and each colour represents the steaming time.
There are also different condiments for you to mix and match and create
your own dipping sauce. This includes Sambal Sauce, Seafood Spicy & Sour
Sauce and Black Pepper Meat Sauce, all of which are specially prepared by the
chefs at Steam Box. As the names explained, I recommend pairing your meat with
the Black Pepper Meat Sauce and the seafood dishes with Seafood Spicy &
Sour Sauce. Do note that the free-flow condiments are charged at $2.5 per person.
