Menya Takeichi @ Eat At Seven | Suntec City, Singapore

Thursday, February 18, 2016

All the way from Japan, Tokyo’s top chicken ramen chain, Menya Takeichi has landed in Suntec City's Sky Garden - being one of the new concept of Eat At Seven. Located at level three of Suntec City’s North Wing Tower 1 and Sky Garden.

The restaurant first earned its compliments in September 2012, when TV Asahi documented the belt of popular shops nestled in Shinbashi, Minato, Tokyo. Menya stands for “ramen shop” in Japanese; and Takeichi when written in Chinese is “, which translates to “samurai”. The eponymous restaurant name is also inspired by founder Takeshi Osawa.

Headed by ramen and yakitori masters, Menya Tekeichi brings you their signature recipe - Chicken Paitan (white soup) Ramen. The Special Ramen | $15.50 broth is rich in collagen from a culmination of simmering the chicken and chicken feet for hours, until it builds into a creamy and flavourful broth with no pork or lard. The chicken broth is light yet rich in flavour and swimming in the broth are ribbons of al dente ramen, I'll say it's a good change from the usual pork broth. Special Rich Shoyu Ramen | $16.50 uses the same broth but with shoyu added, it makes it slightly saltier than the former. I would prefer the former more too!

The highlight in the bowl of ramen are the three types of chicken, grilled chicken, chicken balls and chicken breast that has undergone special process ensuring its tenderness.

In addition, the restaurant has thoughtfully place a flask of clear soup at the side of the table, giving customers an option to add into their collagen-rich soup, when they find the soup is too thick or salty. This clear soup is made from bonito flakes, which impart an umami flavour.

If you would like to have more variety to your meal, simply order your choice of ramen and top-up to a A Set | $3.50 for a small bowl of rice of your choice or B Set | $5.50 for a small bowl of rice of your choice and 3pieces of gyoza.

In frame is the Chicken Ball Rice | $7 on the left, which comes with a poached egg, chicken balls and an unknown cream at the side. It could be mayonnaise but I couldn't be sure when it's all mixed up. This has a wetter texture and is more savoury as compared to Chicken Tempura Rice | $8 which only has chicken tempura and seaweed.

The other mainstays on the sides menu include the Potato Salad (Mentaiko and Nikumiso) | $7 and Fried chicken with Tartar Sauce | $8. This potato salad is such a novelty, where is it served in two portion, one topped with mentaiko that brings the saltiness to it and the other is topped with minced chicken and poached egg. I like how both of them tasted, maybe the mentaiko can cut a slack on the salt?
